The effects of Fluoride on the body
Fluoride accumulates within the body, with research showing individuals being over exposed to fluoride can have dental and skeletal fluorosis, associated arthritis, as well as impacting on thyroid and pineal gland function. In 2010 the CDC (Centre for Disease Control) released information that dental fluorosis was a problem for 41% of children in the United States between the ages of 12-15.
Fluoride is extremely difficult to remove from the water once added; and many people who already filter their water are unaware that their filtration system is not designed to also remove fluoride.

New Research from the Lancet – Fluoride linked to ADHD – “The Silent Epidemic”.
New research published in The Lancet by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) found that various chemicals that many children are exposed to are having a direct effect on the creation of disorders labeled under the name ADHD as well as other mental disorders. One of the chemicals said to be having an effect is fluoride, or variations of fluoride. Governments have been performing artificial fluoridation for a number of years regardless of the lack of effectiveness it has in preventing tooth decay. The research gathered data that clearly illustrated the fact that fluoride is detrimental to brain development, and can lead to autism spectrum disorders and other mental issues. The issue is being coined “a silent epidemic” and most health authorities continue to turn a blind eye to the issue.
Neurodevelopmental disabilities, including autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and other cognitive impairments, affect millions of children worldwide, and some diagnoses seem to be increasing in frequency. Industrial chemicals that injure the developing brain are among the known causes for this rise in prevalence. In 2006, we did a systematic review and identified five industrial chemicals as developmental neurotoxicants: lead, methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, arsenic, and toluene. Since 2006, epidemiological studies have documented six additional developmental neurotoxicants—manganese, fluoride, chlorpyrifos, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, and the polybrominated diphenyl ethers. We postulate that even more neurotoxicants remain undiscovered. To control the pandemic of developmental neurotoxicity, we propose a global prevention strategy. Untested chemicals should not be presumed to be safe to brain development, and chemicals in existing use and all new chemicals must therefore be tested for developmental neurotoxicity. To coordinate these efforts and to accelerate translation of science into prevention, we propose the urgent formation of a new international clearinghouse.

How much fluoride is in tap water?
The majority of councils and water authorities around the country add fluoride to the water; as well as chlorine or chloramines?
Fluoride is injected into drinking water supplies at various locations around Australia in the form of sodium silicofluoride and sodium hexafluorosilicic. As per drinking water standards this is put into the water at up to 1.5 ppm (parts per million) although the average is 1.0 ppm with possible short (a few minutes or hours) spikes over this due to equipment malfunction or human error. These short term spikes will have little effect on the capacity of fluoride removal filters.
The current approved level of fluoridation is approx 1ppm (parts per million). Fluoridation has been carried out for decades and promoted as a means of reducing dental decay in the community. Fluoride is a naturally occurring compound containing fluorine. However the fluoride added by councils and water authorities is the byproduct of heavy industry; such as aluminium production.
The down side of fluoridation is the quantity of 1ppm is applied to all people drinking the water regardless of the individual’s rate of consumption, diet, health and age. Like other aspects of our dietary intake; such as vitamins, minerals or sugar, at the right levels they are harmless or beneficial. But higher levels can cause a malaise of health problems and at extreme intake levels, death.
How to remove Fluoride
Standard carbon filters of any type are unable to remove fluoride without the addition of special media and even with this media added, they will only remove up to 40%. To remove higher percentages requires reverse osmosis, distillation, resin, alumina or bone char.
Reverse osmosis removes approximately 96% and requires resin post cartridges to achieve >99.99% reduction. Distillation removes a higher percentage but is a batch process and is not considered user friendly. Alumina based systems such as the AquaSafe AS280 remove approximately 93% of fluoride but are not suitable for use in bench top systems or incorrectly designed under bench systems as very small trace amounts can under some circumstances leach into the water requiring removal.
Bone Char has been used for industrial water treatment for many years although the vast majority is not approved for drinking water treatment. Drinking water certified NSF61 granular bone char is available however, contact time with the media is very important for removal making cartridge design critical for performance. Removal rates tend to vary considerably and multiple (4 cartridges/stages) filters will be required to remove approximately 95%.
Reverse Osmosis is the recommended system for fluoride reduction/removal followed by correctly designed alumina and bone char systems. For reduction levels above 99%, we suggest specialised resin deioniser cartridges installed after a reverse osmosis system. This type of system may then also include a pH balancing and remineraliser cartridge to increase the water pH and add minerals back resulting in a 6 stage water filtration system.
